imageKeel/Listry travelled to Kilcummin for round four of the U-16 Co.league on Wednesday the 3rd August 2016. It was a wet, cold and windy evening in Kilcummin. This was a top of the table clash and recent history would suggest that it was going to be a close game. Our captain on the evening Cian Flynn won the toss and opted to play with the wind in the first half. Killian Broderick opened the scoring with a nice point from wing back.Kilcummin responded with a point from a free which was quickly cancelled out after Barry Keane scored a free for Keel/Listry. Kilcummin had a good patch and kicked a goal and 2 points. Then our boys had a good period when good play from Barry and Seán Foley resulted in points when goals should have been scored. The hard working Micheál Buckley kicked a good point and Eoin O’Donell chipped in with a super point. Kilcummin kicked three more points in the first half that also saw Barry convert 3 frees. Our backs were defending well towards the end of the half ,an excellent block down from Liam Clifford epitomised the spirit of the defence. Seán Langford was solid in goal. Mark O’Brien,Paudie Horgan and Anthony O’Shea made up a good full back line. Killian Broderick,Gary Murphy and Liam Clifford had to be vigilant with a lively half forward line and all the boys moved the ball nicely out of defence. Cian Flynn and Gearóid Murphy were again this week a new pairing in midfield. The boys were under pressure defending but when on the ball both Cian and Gearóid were comfortable .Killian Murphy won a lot of ball on the wing and carried it well.Barry Keane was strong on the forty and linked well with the inside line.Eoin O’Donell was industrious as ever on the wing and always available to support a team mate.Dean Ladden made his man work hard and good running from Dean created space for others to score. Seán Foley O’Brien at full forward had a good first half and with a bit of luck could have scored a few goals. The towering Micheál Buckley at corner forward was a constant threat and used his height and roaming ability to great effect. So after a half when we missed a lot of scoring opportunities the half time score was Kilcummin 1-6 Keel/Listry 0-9. Level at half time and facing the wind in the second half.
The boys were happy enough at the break and we felt we would create more chances in the second half. However, Kilcummin blitzed us at the start of the second half and we were 9 points down before we knew what was happening. In all the games our boys have shown great heart and we had to dig deep to turn this around. We got back into the game after a fortuitous goal from Barry Keane and this was followed by another soft goal from Cian Flynn. With pressure on the kick out and our confidence growing Barry scored a great goal and we were back in the game. Darragh O’Dowd came on at centre back and Gary Murphy was released to the forwards where he used his pace to great effect. Kilcummin are a fine team and responded with a point. Gearóid Murphy was winning the kick outs and this possession released Mark O’Brien and Killian Broderick up the wing to set up attacks. Killian Murphy was rewarded with a well taken goal after great play and then we had a spell where everything went right for us. Barry Keane, back after a three week break kicked 4 points on the trot.Sean Foley kicked his second point of the evening and the hard working Liam Clifford was rewarded for a good evenings work with a great point after good work from his fellow wing back Killian Broderick. Gearóid Murphy was getting stronger as the game wore on and kicked a wonderful point to boost his confidence. Killian Murphy finished this period of dominance for Keel/Listry with his second goal of the half. Kilcummin are a good side and battled to the end. They scored another 1-2 to finish the game and were always a threat going forward. Our defence was strong in the final quarter,Paudie,Mark and Anthony in the full back line were tenacious.Seán Langford was dependable in goal.Wing backs Liam and Killian were driving forward and youngsters Darragh O’Dowd ,Cian Lenihan and Dylan Brennan didn’t put a foot wrong. A funny second half,a great game played in a sporting manner by two teams that are evenly matched. Well done to our boys and best of luck to Kilcummin in the remainder of the competition. The score in the second half was Keel/Listry 5-7 Kilcummin 2-6 and the final score was Keel/Listry 5-16 Kilcummin 4-12,great entertainment and well refereed.
