On Friday the 8th June ,Listry Junior footballers travelled to Waterville to take on the locals in round 3 of the Co. league. With a lot of players unavailable on the evening,we played 13 a side. Listry played with the wind in the first half and settled into the game nicely with 2 confidently converted frees from Jonathon Sparling. Waterville responded with a couple of points from play and another from a free kick. Listry goalkeeper Mike Dwyer was picking out defenders with restarts and that was the launching pad for a number of goal scoring opportunities created in the first half. Mike Quirke and Cian O’Donoghue were fantastic in the full back line. Paudie Horgan, captain Kieran Murphy and Roman Gallagher were tenacious in the tackle, released the ball quickly and created a great half back line. Seán O Sullivan and Brian Kennedy worked hard at mid field against good opponents. Listry added 4 more points from play, Paul O’Donoghue 2 , Darragh O Shea 1 and Sean O Sullivan 1.Waterville got a fortuitous goal from a free kick and finished the half with a point to leave the half time score Waterville 1-4 Listry 0-6. Darragh O Shea, Paul O Donoghue and Senan Wrenn showed a great appetite for hard work and all 3 played a lot of ball in the half forward line. Donagh Regan and Jonathon Sparling made up the full forward line. Donagh used his big frame to good effect and Jonathon was a constant thorn in the Waterville defence and was unlucky not to score a goal.
We were down a point and facing the wind in the second half. Switching Brian Kennedy and Kieran Murphy worked well with both players responding positively. Jonathon O Connor was introduced at half-time and showed great positional awareness and was confident on the ball. Listry played nice team football in the second half, retained possession and always had a man coming off the shoulder. Waterville stretched the lead with a couple of points and a super score from Roman Gallagher kept us in touch. Darragh O Shea kicked another great point and Jonathon Sparling converted another free.Senan Wrenn who had a tremendous game, had to be replaced after picking up a hand injury. Donagh Regan came back on and got stuck in again. Roman Gallagher was dominating at half back and driving forward at every opportunity. Unfortunately Roman picked up a knee injury and had to be replaced with 10 minutes to go. Anthony Sweeney came on and gave the team a lift when the game was in the melting pot. Anthony popped over a free and then man of the match Paul O Donoghue struck for a great goal.2 more points, 1 from Kieran Murphy and Anthony from play put us in control. Heroic defending when the goal was threatened  limited Waterville to 2 points . Anthony converted another free and Sean O Sullivan added a super point from play. A late fortuitous goal for Waterville made for a tense finish , but, Listry deservedly won by 3 points after a great, spirited team performance. Final score ,Waterville 2-8 Listry 1-14.
