Listry Junior Football;

         On Friday 6th July,Listry Junior football team travelled to Cromane to take on the locals in the final round of the Co.league. Missing a lot of players on the evening, Listry greats ,Aidan O Donoghue and Eoghan Darmody came to the rescue and we played 13 a side with 2 subs. Listry started lively and Sean O Sullivan kicked the first point. Cromane responded with 3 points with the third point scored by the goalkeeper who was after joining the attack. Listry were a bit sloppy in possession and the final pass was intercepted on a few occasions. Our boys continued to attack and hit 2- 3 mid way through the first half. The goals from Seán O Sullivan and Jonathon O Connor and points from Jonathon Sparling, Anthony Sweeney and captain Paul O’Donoghue. Cromane were very competitive and responded with a point from a free and again the goalkeeper came forward to score a second point. Stephen Brosnan was controlling the mid field and Anthony Sweeney kicked 2 points from play. Cromane had a lot of energy and were running at our defence with purpose. Goalkeeper Colm Counihan,defender’s Cian O Donoghue and his uncle Aidan O Donoghue were a solid last line of defence. Half backs  Paudie Horgan, Mike Quirke and Eoghan Darmody broke up several Cromane attacks and were always willing to drive forward.  Cromane finished the half with 2 points , one from a free . Gearóid Murphy ,who was back after injury, kicked a wonderful point from play. This was our final score of the half and much deserved score for Gearóid after working hard in the first half. Sean O Sullivan partnered Stephen in mid field. Anthony Sweeney, Paul O Donoghue and Gearóid Murphy made up a good half forward line. Jonathon Sparling and Jonathon O’Connor made up a clever full forward line. The half time score was Cromane  0-9 Listry 2-7. Two changes at half time Mark Curran replaced Eoghan Darmody and Donagh Regan came on for Stephen Brosnan.  Mark played at corner back with Aidan moving to the wing. Donagh came on at full forward with Paul moving to mid field and Jonathon Sparling moving to centre forward. Both Donagh and Mark played very well and both of them handled a lot of ball in the second half. Cromane pushed hard for a goal in the second half and had to settle for points after great defending by Listry. Cromane had a lot of possession in the second half and Listry had to be patient on the ball and took their scores well after good team play. Anthony Sweeney kept Listry in the game with 3 points. Cromane threw everything at it in the final 10 minutes but a couple of tremendous saves from Colm Counihan and a save on the line from the hard working Paudie Horgan kept them out. Cian O Donoghue burst out of defence on several occasions and was well supported by the whole hearted Mike Quirke.Paul O Donoghue played a captains part all evening , always available for a pass and always encouraging team mates.
Seán O’Sullivan finished the game with two great points after a great hours work by Seán. The final score was Listry 2-12 Cromane 0-16.  Cromane were unlucky to lose after playing some good football. Well done Listry, a great team effort with great battling qualities on display to the very end. The game was excellently refereed by Mike Hickey ,Milltown/Castlemaine.
