This Sunday the 3rd of April 2016 will see the 30th Anniversary running of the Listry Rag Meeting at the farm of Kieran Kennedy in Lahard. The inaugural running of the meeting was ran back in 1986 as a fun event between local greyhound enthusiasts to raise money for the local GAA club. The meeting has gone from strength to strength over its 30 year history with some of the best dogs in the county and far beyond making the journey to test out their charges on the now famed Lahard stretch at the foot of the Macgillicuddy reeks. The hard working committee, which is made up of local families steeped in a history of greyhounds, have combined to forge a very successful meeting that is supported religiously by many greyhound trainers throughout the county and from as far up the country as Kilkenny and Galway. The efficient manner in which the meeting is ran and the great hospitality which greets everyone who attends on the day has ensured that it has stood the test of time and it is a source of immense pride for all of its committee members that it has reaches such a impressive 30 year milestone on Sunday next.
Spanning 3 decades it is inevitable that the wheel of life would catch up with some of its founding committee members of whom quite a number have slipped away from us over the years but who are fondly remembered each year at the meeting, where many a story of days gone by are shared with great friendships forged and renewed over a cup of soup and sandwich at Lahard. Nobody ever left the field on an empty stomach and Sunday promises to be no different. If you have a few hours to spare next Sunday come along to Lahard for a great social gathering of friends and neighbours, all proceeds of the meeting on the day will go towards the Kerry Cancer Support Group who continue to great work in county so you will also be supporting a great cause.
