On Friday 3rd August 2018,Listry junior footballers played St.Michael’s/Filemore in group 5 Co.league final. Played in JP O’Sullivan park in Killorglin on a beautiful evening for football. Listry qualified for the final after finishing on top of the league and Bally/Filemore qualified after a great victory over Dr. Crokes in the semi-final.
       Listry had to play without Senan Wrenn (injured) and Cian O Donoghue (holidays) .Both Senan and Cian have been outstanding for the team this year and would have been on the starting team. Listry started well with corner back Roman Gallagher thundering into the game and driving out of the defence. Sean O Sullivan at half forward cut through the Bally/Filemore defenders and saw a great shot for goal rebound off the crossbar. Gearóid Murphy was first to react and from the rebound kicked the first point of the game. Listry full back Mike Quirke was strong around the square and cut out any danger with tremendous anticipation and tackling.Cain Bradley and Stephen Brosnan formed a good partnership at mid field. Stephen was strong in the air and Cain was scrapping for everything on the ground. Sean O’Sullivan made another great solo run and scored a magnificent goal.Listry were playing well and powerfully built corner forward Darragh O Shea kicked a good point from play.Full forward, Anthony Sweeney was a great target man, winning vital possession close to goal. Sean O Sullivan converted a free from the left side, Anthony scored a free from the right and Anthony scored another from play. Bally/Filemore were coming more into the game and Ciaran Clifford kicked a great point from play.Colm Counihan was solid in goal. Brian Kennedy,Mike Quirke and Roman Gallagher made up a no nonsense tight marking full back line. Minor footballer Paudie Horgan was magnificent at half back, timing his tackles and supporting the man on the ball at all times. Kieran Murphy and Peadar Keane completed a tenacious and alert half back line. Another minor Gearóid Murphy played at left half forward,a strong player with great kicking ability. Paul O Donoghue at centre forward is the pulse of the team,master of the breaking ball and constantly encouraging team mates. Sean O Sullivan at right half forward is a beautiful footballer that can glide  past opponents. The full forward line of Darragh O Shea,Anthony Sweeney and Jonathon Sparling was strong, clever and skilful. Mid way through the first half Cain Bradley who was playing very well at the time had to be replaced after picking up an ankle injury. Brian Kennedy moved to mid field and got stuck in immediately. Listry legend Aidan O Donoghue come on at corner back and as always Aidan was tenacious and brilliant in the tackle. Bally/Filemore drove at the Listry defence and Colm Counihan made a terrific save. Bally/Filemore pressure was rewarded with 3 converted frees. The hard working Jonathon Sparling responded with a neat point from play and Anthony scored another free. Half time score was Listry 1-7 Bally/Filemore 0-4.  
          Anthony Sweeney kicked the first point from play in the second half. Bally/Filemore like all South Kerry teams, had great heart ,replied with a goal from Stephen Cronin and put themselves back in the game. Young Gearóid Murphy reacted brilliantly to the goal and kicked two wonderful points after great team work from Listry. Bally/Filemore pushed hard for another goal and some heroic defending by Aidan O Donoghue, Mike Quirke, and Paudie Horgan kept us in the game. Kieran Murphy fielded majestically when our defence looked stretched.Sean O Sullivan scored a free and Anthony Sweeney scored another point from play.Bally/Filemore were throwing everything at us and replied with 2 more  points one from play and another from a free. Listry introduced Eoghan Darmody and the Listry great didn’t leave the side down with a match winning goal line save. Listry were working hard Stehen,Paul,Brian and Pedar scrapping for every ball around the middle.Listry forwards were always a threat and again Darragh O Shea showed his strength to kick a tremendous point. Bally/Filemore  never gave up and James Moran kicked 2 more points. However, Listry played with great passion all evening and finished strongly  with Eoghan Darmody bursting out of defence linking up with the attack and finishing with a tremendous point. The final score was Listry 1-14 St.Michael’s/ Filemore 1-9 .  Scores ;Sean O Sullivan 1-2,Gearóid  Murphy  0-3,Darragh O Shea 0-2, Anthony Sweeney 0-5 ,Jonathon Sparling  0-1,Eoghan Darmody 0-1.A great game , hard luck to Bally/Filemore who played the game in a sporting manner and congratulations to Listry.  Joint captains Kieran Murphy and Paul O Donoghue accepted the group 5 Co. league trophy on behalf of the team.The game was excellently refereed by Michael Moriarty and his umpires from Keel gaa club.
